Café du Monde is not just a café. It is an experience, a tradition, and a living piece of New Orleans history. I literally flew from New York City to New Orleans for one reason only: to sit at Café du Monde, eat beignets, and drink coffee. Two years ago, during a business trip, someone brought me here for the first time. I enjoyed it so much that I could not stop thinking about it. This time, I planned an entire trip just to come back again. That alone says everything. Café du Monde has a feeling that is hard to explain unless you experience it yourself. Sitting there gives me goosebumps every time. The tables, chairs, plates, mugs, silverware, and even the machines feel like they are preserved from another era. It honestly feels like stepping back into the late 1800s, and that timeless atmosphere is part of the magic. They keep it simple, and that is what makes it perfect. The menu is just beignets and coffee, nothing more, nothing less. Beignets were brought to Louisiana by the Acadians. They are square pieces of dough, fried and generously covered with powdered sugar, served in orders of three. There is a lot of powdered sugar on them by default, but you can always ask them to go light on the sugar. I personally loved them with light sugar, because it let me enjoy the flavor more and honestly eat more without it feeling too heavy. The coffee is classic and has chicory in it, which gives it that signature New Orleans taste. It is strong, smooth, and pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the beignets. You can enjoy it black or with milk (café au lait) depending on your preference. One important thing to know before visiting: Café du Monde is cash only. They do not accept credit or debit cards. You will always see people here. Locals, tourists, families, couples, and solo travelers. Outside, there are often jazz musicians and artists playing music and entertaining the crowd. People are laughing, talking, enjoying food, and soaking in the atmosphere. It is live
THIS PLACE ACCEPTS CASH ONLY!! Café du Monde is an iconic stop in New Orleans and definitely worth visiting at least once. The beignets are fresh, hot, and generously coated with powdered sugar—simple but delicious. Paired with their café au lait, it’s a classic New Orleans experience. The café is always busy and can get crowded, especially during peak hours, but the service moves fairly quickly considering the volume of people. Seating is mostly open-air, which adds to the charm and atmosphere. Overall, Café du Monde is a must-visit for anyone in NOLA. Great beignets, good coffee, and a true New Orleans classic.
This place is not overhyped. Still the best beignets in New Orleans. The location is perfect too, always live music and it’s so fun. You can also buy the mix, coffee cups etc from the window as well. I love 3 hours away from New Orleans and I have driven here specifically for an order of beignets and I’ve driven back home haha. Cafe du monde is truly a New Orleans staple and a must visit when in town.
It was unseasonably cold and raining on the day I visited. I had to wait briefly for a table. There are two options. Chicory coffee and beignets. Both were amazing. It’s a shame I couldn’t experience the patio. It seems like it would be a fun experience, Parisian-like. Either way, if you want good beignets, the definitely go here!!!
So amazing. I felt like I traveled back in time. You can tell they run it how its been ran since they opened. Delicious beignets & coffee, excellent service, and the street performers are icing on the cake. So grateful for the opportunity!
It was our first time in New Orleans and we wanted to try the famous "beignet" and we really enjoyed it! It was so soft, warm, and tasty! Thank you for contributing to our amazing New Orleans experience with all those vibrant streets, super delicious food, and these yummy beignets and coffee au lait!
kay, these beignets are delicious, melt in the mouth and very fresh! The chicory coffee is rich and satisfying. My cup was just broken but they gave me a new one. Be prepared for crowds, and note that tables are first-come, first-served. You are probably going to stand in a line, but I was pleasantly surprised how fast it moved. Don't forget to bring cash, they don't accept cards. Café du Monde is a New Orleans icon that's definitely worth visiting, even if it's not entirely "exceptional". The retro vibe is enhanced by live musicians, and the atmosphere is lively with blues music playing right next to the coffee shop. As a cultural landmark, it's fascinating to learn about its past, and the crowds are a testament to its popularity. The real charm lies in the history and culture. Be prepared for powdered sugar to get everywhere, lol! The only drawback is the restroom, which could use some TLC. Still, it's a must-visit spot in New Orleans, and you'll likely leave with a sweet treat and a memorable experience.
I enjoyed the experience, Cafe Du Monde is a total tourist trap but we will all go there lol. There's no need for all that sugar lol waste. There probably will be a line outside but it goes pretty fast. I tried there beignets and a latte it was warm and tasty. Lorettas beignets are better 😉. The servers were friendly and orders came out in no time.
Well, I have to say this was such a fun place to visit. I know other people are very critical saying it’s not what they expected or the service was rushed. Come on people the place is busy as can be. They will be lucky to find a seat. There’s powdered sugar everywhere - it’s loud . It’s confusing. It’s expensive and it’s fried dough. Our waiter was lovely and the experience was worth it. The beignets were hot. They were delicious. They were covered in mounds of powdered sugar. The coffee was creamy and wonderful and hot. The view was incredible watching all of the people, the tourist, the locals. It was an amazing experience take it for what it’s worth. try to find a seat. Try to take a breath and enjoy the moment. And yes, make sure you get the powder sugar down the front of your shirt. It’s part of the mystique.
A visit to Café du Monde is more than just a coffee stop — it’s an experience that captures the true spirit of New Orleans. From the moment you approach the open-air café, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm beignets fills the air, instantly drawing you in. It’s lively, energetic, and full of character — just like the city itself. What makes Café du Monde truly special is its simplicity done perfectly. Their famous beignets, served hot and generously covered in powdered sugar, are absolutely irresistible. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they practically melt in your mouth. Pair them with their signature café au lait — a rich blend of coffee and chicory with steamed milk — and you have a combination that’s hard to beat. Every bite and sip feels comforting and indulgent at the same time. It’s a place where friends, families, tourists, and locals all gather together. There’s something beautiful about sitting at those iconic green-and-white tables, sharing plates of beignets while powdered sugar dusts your clothes and table. No one seems to mind — in fact, that’s part of the charm. Laughter, conversations, and the clinking of coffee cups create a vibrant atmosphere that feels welcoming to everyone. The portions are generous, and it’s easy to keep ordering more because the taste never disappoints. It’s one of those rare spots where the quality has remained consistent over the years. Despite being busy most of the time, the service moves efficiently, ensuring that everyone gets to enjoy their treats without long waits.
